Developing Human Potential for Building World Class Organization
I attended the conference organized by NIPM( National Institute of Personnel Management) in TAJ
The speakers who really touched me were:
1.Mr. D.Bhattacharya ,Executive Director ,IFFCO,
2.Mr.Manoj Barthwal,DGM(HR) ,ONGC ,Dehradun
3.Mr.Himanshu Kumar,Head,HR,TCS Lko.
4.Mr.Malay Chaturvedi ,GM(TQM &HR),Idea Cellular Ltd.
Mr.Bhattacharya happened to be the disciple of Swami Vivekananda and told us how each & every emplotee of IFFCO was evolved in spirituality. As a result ,employee turnover at IFFCO was only 1% which was because of only those employees who retired.
On the contrary, the attrition rate in Telecom Industry was quoted between 35% to 40% by Mr.Malay Chaturvedi during the conference.
Once Prince of Jordon visited IFFCO & stayed there for 2 days. When he was leaving,ha was requested to express his views on the working of IFFCO.He commented that,”If I happen to take next birth,I wish to be an IFFCO employee.”
That speaks volumes about IFFCO’s Organisational culture.
On more very exciting fact came to my notice during the conference.TCS pays its employees 52% of its turnover as Salaries. On the other hand , Telecom sector was paying only 7%-8% of its turnover to its employees as salaries.
That was, perhaps ,the reason that attrition rate for Telecom Industry was 35%-40% .
TCS pays such a high salaries to its employees because they have to double their turnover every three years which is really a challenging task.
Mr.Himanshu Kumar from TCS told that ratio of employees to HR generalists ranges from 141:1 to 318:1.And ,he suggested that routine functions of HR could be outsourced to Call Centres.
Mr.Malay Chaturvedi of Idea Cellular Ltd. threw light on very interesting topic of “Organizational Culture” & defined it as the soul of the organization. He said that Culture of an organization can be felt & can not be touched.
He also described how can we create good culture in an organization & emphasized that Leaders & Managers should understand Candidates SWEAT during the interviews.
Mr.Manoj Barthwal from ONGC spoke about Leadership and emphasized that Leader may NOT necessarily be the TOP man.He elaborated this point with the help of an example of South West Airlines,U.S.whih ,again has an attrition rate of less than 1%.
He further said “ If you don’t allow people to experiment & fail, your company is determined to fail.”
He very rightly said that ,” Leadership comes into the action when there is a crisis.People ,then , come to know who is the leader.”
He very bluntly said that Mahatma Gandhi & Jawaharlal Nehru were not very good leaders because they did not nurture other leaders.so,he said,” A Leader progressively makes himself dispensable,Leadership is a baton that must be passed on.”
During the seminar,
Some important papers were also presented by Neha Awasthi,Dr.Chintan Mani
Shukla,Dr.Shipra Shrivastava & Dr.Vinod Kumar Yadav.
Prof.Prithvi Yadav, Director, GHSIMR also presented his ideas on “ Emerging Business Intelligence in HRM.”
In all the conference was worth attending & was a memorable experience.
